Section B Passage One There are four basic types of college degrees, starting with the associate degree. The associate takes about two years to complete when one is enrolled full time. The bachelor's degree takes four years when one is enrolled full time with the master's taking one to two years, and the doctor's degrees are designed for transfer. Some are technical degrees which are called terminal degrees, which means they do no count towards a bachelor's. The bachelor's is normally required before one can work at the doctor's level. The length in credit hour of university degree programs varies from one school to another. In general, the A. A. is 60 semester hour or 95 quarter hours. the B.A. (or B.S. ) is 120 semester hours or 185 quarter hours. The M.A. is 30 semester hour or 45 quarter hours and the Ph.D. is 60 to 72 semester hours or 95 to 120 quarter hours. 11. What is the first American college degree? 12. What is a terminal degree? 13. Passage Two First aid may be defined as the immediate and temporary treatment to a victim of an accident or serious illness until the supervision of a physician can be obtained. First aid commences with the steadying effect upon the stricken person when he realizes that competent hands will help him. The emergency situating often causes confusion in the mind of the victim. Things seem unreal and remote, and he often cannot think clearly and rationally for some time. The emotional reaction which results from a serious accident takes time to subside. Therefore, first aid is more than the physical attention of addressing his injuries or making him comfortable. It is the general mental effect that the well-selected word of encouragement, the expressing of willingness to help, the uplifting effect of the first aider's evident capability can be given. The thoughtful suggestions made to solve immediate problems, the information given concerning nearby physicians and hospitals, the telephone call to summon medical help or an ambulance or to notify a relative, all these are the tasks of the first aider. The good first aider deals with the whole situation, the person and the injury. He knows what not to do as well as what to do. Thus, he avoids the error so commonly made through well meant but misguided efforts. He confines his procedures to what is necessary, keeping the handling of injured parts to a minimum. 14. Which statement is true about first aid? 15. When helping a victim, what would a good first aider not do? 16. Which factor does first aid not usually include?
Passage Three Some students at the Open University left school 20 years ago. Others are younger but all must be at least 21 years old. This is one example of how the Open University is different from all other universities. Its students must either work full-time or be at home all day, for instance, mothers of families. They do not have to pass any examinations before they are accepted as students. This is why the university is called "open". The university was started in order to help a known group-people who missed having a university education when they were young. The first name for the Open University was "The University of the Air". The idea was to teach" on the air", in other words, on radio and television. Most of the teaching is done like this. Radio and television have brought the classroom into people's homes. But this, on its own, is not enough for a university education. The Open University student also received advice at one of 283 study centers in the country. 36 weeks of the year he has to send written work to a "tutor", the person who guides his studies. He must also spend 3 weeks every summer as a full-time student. Tutors and students meet and study together, as in other universities. At the end of the Open University's first year, the results were good. Three out of every 4 students passed their examinations If they do this every year, they will finish their studies in 4 or 5 years. 17. Why is the university called" open"? 18. What does "on the air" here mean? 19. How many weeks every summer must a person spend as a full-time student? 20. How long will the students take to finish their studies?
