Section B:
Directions: In this section you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Then write the corresponding letter on the space given.
Passage 1
The college had a very good football team, and its best player was a student who always had trouble in school. Then one year the dean of the college said that the player would have to leave because he had cheated on an exam. The football coach immediately went to the dean to try to persuade him to let the student stay in school. The dean showed him two answer papers. "This one is Susan's paper. She's the best student in the class," he said." And this one's your football player's. They're exactly the same. The football player sat at the next desk, and just copied from her."
"But maybe she copied from him," the coach said. "You can't prove it was the other way."
"Look at this," the dean said. "Susan didn't know the answer to this question. She wrote, 'I don't know'. And your football player wrote, `Neither do I`."
Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard:
11. What did the dean tell the coach about the best football player?
12. What did the dean think of the player?
13. Which is true according to the story?

Passage 2
Many university students dislike studying history because there is little to get excited about when historical events are presented in a boring manner. However, I'll never forget my American History professor, Dr. Williamson. Each year leaped from the page of our text and became as real as the daily news report on the radio. My favourite lecture concerned the American Revolution. Dr. Williamson set the mood for the story by imitating Paul Revere, a well-known silversmith, working in his shop. The American colonists were angry because of the British control over their lives. Revere felt that war between the British and the colonists was imminent. Then Dr. Williamson told us about Revere rowing across the Charles River from Boston on April 18, 1775. I can see the professor now as he raised his hand to his forehead, as if he were looking across the Charles River to the Old North Church in Boston. Suddenly, Revere spotted two lanterns, a signal which meant that the British would attack by sea. He jumped on his horse to warn the villagers of the attack, Professor Williamson reminded us that the first battles of the American Revolution were fought at Concord and at Lexington, Massachusetts, the year before the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Never before had history seemed so alive to me. And all because a professor cared enough to put his heart into his teaching.
Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard:
14. Why does the speaker feel that most students dislike history?
15. How did Paul Revere earn a living?
16. Where were the first battles of the American Revolution fought?

Passage 3
The National Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one-half of all fatal traffic accidents involve alcohol. Every year, thousands of passengers and pedestrians are killed because of reckless, irresponsible behaviour by a drunk driver.
Ohio law prohibits persons who are under the influence of alcohol to drive. If you do drive while under the influence of alcohol, you can be arrested. If you are convicted of drunk driving, you will be sentenced to at least three days in jail, and your license will be suspended for thirty days. But did you know that the court can sentence you to as much as six months in jail and fine you up to the amount of '500 in addition to the mandatory three-day sentence? Think about it next time you leave a party.
If you drink, don't drive.
This has been a public service announcement by Ohio Safety Commission.
Questions 17 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard:
17. How many accidents resulting in death are caused by drunk driving?
18. What is the minimum required sentence for driving under the influence of alcohol?
19. How long may court require an offender to spend in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol?
20. What is the main idea of this announcement?
