China is Apple's second-largest market, behind the U.S., but the company has been slow to release the new iPad in China. The device already has come out in most developed countries and many other developing nations, including Venezuela and Malaysia.
The U.S. company didn't offer a reason for the slow release, which comes amid a lawsuit between Apple and Hong Kong-based Proview International Holdings Ltd. and its subsidiaries over the trademark of Apple's iconic tablet computer. A Chinese court said last week that Apple plans to pay $60 million to settle the dispute.
In offering the new product, Apple might look back at previous releases, which were greeted warmly but marred by clashes involving customers and scalpers. In January, the company briefly stopped selling its new iPhone 4S at its China Apple Stores after unruly customers led police to seal off part of a mall in Beijing's tony Sanlitun shopping district.

In May 2011, customers who lined up for new, white iPhones scuffled with employees, leading managers to lock the doors at that same Beijing store in Sanlitun.

An Apple device compatible with China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd.'s mobile network received a network-access license in May, according to a regulatory website, suggesting that Apple was close to being able to sell its new iPad in China.

Apple sold 11.8 million iPad units in its most recent period, more than double from a year earlier. Apple's competitors have recently entered the tablet-computer arena in a battle for market share. In June, Google Inc. unveiled its Nexus 7 tablet, which features Android mobile software, a 7-inch screen and a camera. The tablet is priced at $199, significantly less than the least-costly available Apple iPad and on par with Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire device.
