Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)
Passage One
The diamond is considered the most famous and valuable jewel in the world.
Diamonds were made as a result of great volcanic heat and pressure. A volcano is a mountain with a hole in the top. When a volcano is very active it sometimes explodes and causes great damage.
Diamonds were pushed towards the surface of the earth-millions of years ago-by a number of great volcanic explosions. It is in the narrow volcanic pipes that diamonds are found. They are also found among the sand stones of certain river beds, and in a few places on the floor of the sea. For they were washed down the mountain sides by the rain.
Diamonds are very rare. There are not many diamond pipes or diamond-producing rivers in the world. During the last century adventurers from Europe went to Brazils, because they had heard that there were diamonds in the River Amazon. Man of these early diamond miners died of illness or were lost forever in the great forests. But some returned home rich.
The earliest known diamonds were found in India many centuries ago. The most recent and exciting discoveries have been made in eastern Russia. But most of the world's diamonds now come from the Congo, from Tanzania-which has the largest diamond mine in the world-and from South Africa.
11. Which of the following is NOT mentioned by the speaker?
12. According to the passage, where did diamonds first come into existence?

Passage Two
Let me briefly explain how tomorrow's registration will go. In the morning, all students are to report to the gymnasium with their completed course enrollment forms. These forms must be signed by your academic advisor and each course listed must get the department's approval. Tables will be set up all the way around the North end of the gym for the different departments. so you simply go to the appropriate desk and have someone there stamp your form approved. When you have completed that process for all your courses, you can proceed to the cashiers at the south end of the gym. There, you will have to pay for tuition, housing, and insurance. You are not considered officially enrolled in the university until you have paid all these fees. In the afternoon, all new students must return to the gym to be photographed and to pick their students identification cards. Any problems or questions that you have concerning registration, should be directed to the counselors on duty at the gym tomorrow.
14. Who is the speaker?
15. According to the speaker, what may students do only after they pay tuition and fee?
16. What will be the role of the counselors at the gymnasium?
Passage three
The family is changing. In the past , grandparents, parents, and children used to live together, and they had an extended family. Sometimes two or more brothers with their wives and children were part of this large family group. But family structure is changing throughout the world. The nuclear family consists of only one father, one mother, and children; it is becoming the main family structure everywhere.
The nuclear family offers married women some advantages: they have freedom from their relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Studies show that in nuclear families en and women usually make an equal number of decisions about family life.
But wives usually have to "pay" for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived in extended families, sisters, grandparents, and aunts helped one another with housework and childcare. In addition, older women in a large family group had important positions. Wives in nuclear families do not often enjoy this benefits, and they have another disadvantage, too: women generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live alone.
Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In the past, men worked outside the home and women worked inside. Housework and childcare were a full-time job, and there was no time for anything else. Now women work outside and have more freedom then they did in the past, but they still have to do most of the housework. The women actually have two full-time jobs, and they have not much free time.
17. Who used to live together in an extended family?
18. What advantages does the nuclear family offer women?
19. What are some disadvantages of the nuclear family for women?
20. Why are many women dissatisfied with marriage and the nuclear family?
