The traditional Chinese hospitality requires that the foods served be so diverse that guests cannot eat up all the dishes. A typical Chinese banquet menu includes a set of cold dishes served at the beginning and the hot ones that follow, such as meat, poultry, vegetables, and so on. A whole fish is considered to be an essential part at most banquets, unless various kinds of seafood have been served. Nowadays, Chinese people like to combine Western specialties with traditional Chinese dishes. Therefore, it is not rare to see steak being served. Salad has also been catching on, although traditionally Chinese people do not eat any uncooked food. There is usually at least a course of soup, served either at the beginning or at the end of the banquet. Desserts and fruit usually mark the end of the banquet.
